Countdown to Monday

First of all, we apologize for the lack of updates the last few days. As we stated, Elias tested positive again for staph and was moved into isolation. This is mainly for precaution, not a sign of overwhelming concern by the doctors. It is in the mucus membranes and not in the blood stream and they will continue to monitor to ensure it does not get to that point. In other words, there is not a great need to worry about this right now. It is not known how long he will remain in isolation, he must have 3 negative tests before returning to the general population. There are actually some advantages to him being in isolation now that could potentially be beneficial. First of all he has a private room. Before, he was in a nursery style room with up to 6 other babies. Elias is very "busy" and reactive to sounds (which is very good) so now he will be able to rest more soundly. Also, this does not slow up the plan at all. That was our main concern. We were relieved to hear that this had no impact on progress.

We were able to get a game plan from the doctors on extubation. They are going to try again on Monday. There are a few things they are considering. First is to take him off the vent and see how he does without anything, or possibly nasal trumpets. Second, if that doesn't work put him on Si PAP again to see if he lasts longer than the last time. Here is a photo of a nasal trumpet:

Other than that Elias seems to be doing well. He was alert for a little while yesterday and seemed very happy. We just can not wait to have him home with us. So right now, wish us luck and please continue to send lots of prayers and thoughts for success on Monday's extubation.
