Yesterday's Outcome

The rest of Elias' day yesterday was very calm and restful. He was much more comfortable intubated than he was yesterday morning on the SiPaP. He was just having to work too hard. We can celebrate the fact that he lasted nearly 24 hour, and that is a sign of improvement. The other times he has been extubated he has barely made it 20 minutes. As always, this marvelous little guy is able to champion even the smallest success out of a disappointing scenario. That is such a blessing. This morning he has been awake and alert with periods of sleep.

The team is still consulting on what the next step should be. We talked with several members of the team yesterday and got a wide range of possibilities. Everything from just wait it out, to going back in with a bronchoscopy and potentially a tracheostomy. They obviously need to arrive at a consensus before they do anything. We just have to be patient and let them battle out the pros & cons. We are confident the best decision will be made for Elias. For now they are content with letting him just be comfortable.

They did go ahead and remove his central line, which had developed a small leak. That was a very quick & painless process. As of right now they do not see the need to put another line in at this time. All of his medications at this point can be administered through his feeding tube, so there is no reason to subject Elias to unnecessary invasive procedures. He has certainly already had his share and there will be more in the future.

All in all, what could have turned into a miserable day was steered toward success yet again. Elias is certainly not afraid to show them what he wants and needs. He just prefers to do it with dramatic style!
