We got a call this morning from the NICU at 4:50 am, never a good thing and always makes your heart stop. It was a doctor calling to tell us that Elias was not doing very well. They are having difficulty stabilizing him. His heart rate keeps dropping and he is blood oxygen levels are low. The had paged Pediatric Surgery to come up and take a look at him.
We talked to his nurse at 5:45am. Ped Surgery was in the room with him trying to reposition his trach tube. There seems to be a sweet spot to keep Elias from clamping down causing his vitals to drop. They have kept in isolation, but had to move him to a larger room because they are going to put him on the oscillation vent. This is not a positive move, but one that should help stabilize his airway and prevent him from having bronchospasms.
Right now, we are a little frightened. We are swimming in a sea of emotions right now. We know Elias is a fighter and strong, but this is certainly his toughest battle yet. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers today to help give him the extra strength he needs right now. We will try to keep you updated from the hospital throughout the day.
