The End of a Very Frightening Day

Elias is doing much better than earlier. He is still not out of the woods completely but he his moving very nicely in the right direction. He is now off the oscillator and back on the regular vent with higher settings and about 70% oxygen (weened down from 100%). To say he is much better is truly an understatement. There was some real concern from the doctors and his nurse this morning told us she knew things were not good when she saw the crash cart outside Elias' room. It very sad to think, but we could have lost our little guy this morning. That is how critical he was. The doctors did not expected him to react quite that bad. As usual Elias played out in dramatic fashion. They have him on paralysis medication to keep him immobile while his trach heals. Since they want no movement he would get this medicine about every hour the beginning of the morning, but down to every 2 hours or as needed now. We would see him twitching his hand or arm as if to say I can still move it hahaha! The doctors still are cautious because Elias, when he clamps down, he goes down fast. So he is getting one to one care, meaning his nurse has no other patients except him. It will take a few days but it seems the worst is over. We will keep everyone updated. Thank you all for the amazing show of support today. Every time we saw another update we would tell Elias about all the people out there pulling for him. It was a very difficult day, and the staff at the NICU was so supportive today. They were all very sad Elias was having such a rough time. Many nurses came by his room to see how he was doing, some nurses had called in yesterday to get an update on him. One nurse came by on her day off to check on him. Elias has certainly captured the hearts and attention of so many, it is amazing. We were very appreciative of all the support, love and thoughts Elias and ourselves received today. It certain made a very rough day a little smoother a thousand thank yous to everyone out there.

We took a few pictures today, We know everyone is anxious to see what he truly looks like without tubes and tape on his face. Keep in mind he is a little swollen all over his face and body & some of the photos are not "cute." It is raw photos of what Elias looked like today. Let it begin who does he look like more...??

  1. Thank God. My husband was talking about you guys during dinner, asking for an update. I was so worried when there wasn't one. But now there is. A wonderful update. I'll say it again.

    Thank God.

Also, I think Elias looks like George Clooney. With less hair.

  2. Hi! You don't know me, but I'm from the Sept 06 sunflower board and Christine directed me over here. I am so glad that things are improving. I recently had my 3rd child, my first boy, and he was diagnosed with TE Fistula and Atresia, and he is 17 days old, and still in the NICU. They tried to do the repair for his TE Fistula/Atresia, and a week later, it ripped apart, so now he is in the hospital for months until they can attempt it again. It is such a terrifying time, and I'm so sorry you're family is going through all of these rough patches as well. Many prayers to you and your beautiful son. I hope to hear more good news updates soon! If you ever need anyone to talk to, I'd be more than happy to listen.
