Hold On

It is not definitive, but things are not looking positive right now on if the surgery will happen tomorrow or not. Elias began to throw up this morning for no apparent reason. It was about 10 mls or quite a bit in layman terms. His previous episodes a few weeks ago were significantly smaller amounts. They stopped the feeds and took an x-ray to check the tube placement. Everything looked fine and to be in place properly. His feeds were restarted and blood labs were drawn. The results came back with signs of potential infection or bug; CRP level up, Crit levels low & white count elevated. He began the episodes again this evening around 8pm except this time Elias had pulled his feeding tube out. They went ahead and stopped the feeds, which they would have done anyway in a few hours and started IV fluids. They are running the labs again to determine if he might be getting something. If he does have anything then the surgery would have to be scrubbed and rescheduled. They will likely not know for sure until early in the morning.

We had a feeling the NICU ride was becoming turbulent today when he threw up on his clean clothes (I know that's normal, but it hasn't happened before with Elias) plus he leaked 3 ostomy bags (including 1 put on by the ostomy nurse) in as many hours. Then to top it off he wiggled his hand out of his left hand splint (which is becoming a habit) and proudly flashed it to daddy like the great Houdini, master of escape.

We are going to stop with that tonight. There are some other details from the day, but right now we are having difficulty figuring out exactly how to feel about all this. It is very frustrating, and as Katharine so succinctly put it, I just want him to get better. With everything he is going through we are upset over a little spit-up.
