More G-Tube Problems

While yesterday was a good day for Elias in the OR, as if on cue another issue arose. This time it was with our old friend the G-Tube. Since last Friday it had been doing wonderfully with minimal leakage. However, yesterday afternoon it began to do its gushing again. His meds came out as well, we could see the coloring. The NP for Ped Surgery came in and tried to position it and rig it with gauze and surgical foam in an attempt to keep it stationary. The skin around needs to heal and seal. That seemed to work and was monitored the rest of the day and over night. There were no more incidents, until this morning. 40 ml and his meds came gushing out again. Elias surgeon was in the OR working on a case so another attending came up to look with the NP. Their initial recommendation is to rest the G-tube for a few days. That can only be achieved by one of two things happening. IV fluids for Elias or put the feeding tube back in his nose past the stomach (NJ) and feed him that way. As of right now they are trying to determine the best action. IV fluids is not a great option, even though he has to have one for 10-14 days for the antibiotics IV fluids put more pressure on the line and can cause it to lose access quicker, forcing them to start new ones more often. Of course with the NJ tube it just sucks because he finally got free of all that yesterday. They are still battling the dehydration issue and this is certain not helping or making it any easier. We should find more out in just a bit an what they think is best.

On a brighter note we got more affirmation that our communication issues have been addressed and dealt with. We have noticed a difference first off, but several people in key positions have approached us or our nurses to inquire different things and discuss it. I think we should be good on that end moving forward.

I'm working on the photos from the last few days and as soon as I can get them uploaded I will post them. There is some maintenance going on still.

  1. I'm sorry you are living the whole three steps forward, two steps back thing. Glad you have a lot of support. Kisses for Elias. Different topic - did you look up www.littlestheroesproject.com ? It was on the Vacterl support board. Anyway, we did, and we have a photog coming out to do a shoot in the fall. For free. Very excited. Maybe it will give you something positive to think about for a few hours?
