Baptism of Elias

Elias was baptized this afternoon by David, one of the chaplains at the hospital. It was a very simple but touching ceremony done at his bedside. Megan, Elias' nurse today was honored to be a part of this. Most of the nurses that have been assigned to him absolutely love him. They are constantly telling us how brave he is and how cooperative he can be.

When we arrived this morning at the hospital we had to wait for about 30 minutes before we could go in and see him. Elias' PIC line that was put in last week infiltrated (went outside of the blood vessel). They were in the process of collecting blood & urine for cultures to check for any potential infections. For now they were giving him fluids through the IV line in his scalp. Tomorrow they are more than likely taking him to the OR to put in what is called a central line (longer lasting IV line essentially). This will be how he gets his TPN (nutrients), fluids, and certain medications. The PIC line/central lines are practically routine for all longer term NICU babies. Friday the Pediatric Surgeon wants to test Elias' esophagus via radiology to check for leaks. If all looks well, then this will set up the next major step, beginning to feed him. This will give the doctors a really good indication on how well the chylothorax is clearing.

An Occupational Therapist came by today to talk with us about Elias and potential therapies. She told us she had worked a little with him to evaluate. She had some positive things to note in regards to range of motion particularly in his wrist and arms, as well as his legs and shoulders. We should have more information on that in the next few days.

We know everyone is wondering when he might get to come home. After talking with the Neonatologist and considering the chylothorax the time line still stands at MINIMUM 4-6 weeks. So our first target date, which is likely to change (don't be surprised), to bring him home will be the beginning of July. Thank you again for the continued thoughts & prayers. Please feel free to contact us or visit, it does help.
