Elias' Surgeries

Elias had his surgeries today and we are now home. He recovered very well and is on some pain management narcotics. They considered keeping him overnight, but were pleased with his progression and his handling of the narcotics. So they left it up to us. We decided to bring him home. Little did we know that would be a mistake, because we are without a nurse for tonight. This is one of the two regular nights we do not have a nurse assigned still. We were led to believe that tonight was covered, butwere then informed that the nurse they had could not do it "because she has a houseful of guests coming for Thanksgiving." Last time I checked, it was Tuesday, two days away, for number one, and secondly, the need for healthcare does not stop on the holidays. Disease does not take a time out for everyone to celebrate. There are some careers that require you to sacrifice the amenities and luxuries on what we Americans consider to be normal or entitled to. If you are not willing to make those sacrifices, then don't get in that line of work. It is not some big surprise, or some huge secret, it is pretty obvious. Oh yeah, and just to throw it out there, we got our December schedule for nursing. We had 13 open shifts for the month, 7 have now been covered, but the 6 that are left are holiday related, so I think I have better odds of becoming Donald Trump's personal assistant than getting them covered right now, and 3 of those 6 days are consecutive. UGGGHHHH!!!!

OK off the soap box.

Back to Elias' surgery. He did lose some blood, but not much, and he probably could have used a small transfusion, but because of the FA they are just letting it go and continuing his daily iron supplement to help bring his blood counts up. They will continue to have a higher threshold for transfusions. It was not a lot, but enough to keep him looking a little on the pale side for a few days or so, and maybe a little weak. Nothing to get crazy about. Regardless of the lack of nursing, Elias will do better here at home with us, than he would at the hospital. We are so glad everything went smoothly, and we look forward to the three of us having a great Thanksgiving together, our first as a family, and so happy that he will be home with us! Even with all the stress and unrelenting issues going on in our lives, we still have much to be thankful for and feel very blessed.
